The MacBook Air might have been the product everyone has been talking about, but the Time Capsule will be the one everyone is buying. I’ve talked to half a dozen people about it in the days following the announcement, and the only one who isn’t picking one up on the spot is still primarily a Windows user (by budget, not by choice).
This product has the perfect combination of features at a killer price:
•802.11n router, which will be a welcome upgrade to a huge number of 802.11b and 802.11g networks.
•Gigabit ethernet ports, for ultrafast wired networking between desktops and the built-in storage.
•Print server to share any USB printer to all computers.
•And of course, the built in NAS storage and Time Machine integration
•$500 for 1TB is a bargain. The Airport Extreme is $180, and a bare Seagate 1TB hard drive runs $300 on sale. $20 for the NAS hardware and slick integration.
Everyone is going to buy one of these, including yours truly. In fact, from an e-mail I sent a couple months ago:
“What I'd really like to get is a 1TB drive so I can backup every last byte I have on every machine in the house, *and* use Time Machine besides.”
Apple must have been listening.
